Gildings

auctioneers & valuers – at your service

Based in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, Gildings is one of the Midlands’ leading auctioneers and valuers. Established by John Gilding with the first auction sales held in 1980 the company has developed a strong client base nationally and internationally as a highly reputable auction house.

Contrary to the traditional image of the auction house, Gildings are placed at the forefront of the fast-expanding global market for high-quality antiques and works of art. As well as inviting bids in their modern saleroom, they employ the latest online technology to extend their regular auction sales to real-time bidders worldwide across multiple platforms.

The Gildings expertise lies partly in recognising trends in specialist markets for antiques, collectables, decorative art, jewellery & silver, fine art & pictures.

Continually seeking out desirable lots, and revising and evaluating the contents and themes of their auctions to meet the ever-changing demands of collectors, connoisseurs and investors. In recent years there has been an explosion of public interest in vintage items and antiques, fueled by popular TV programmes. But far from being left behind by the phenomenal rise of ebay and other online auctions, Gildings has expertly ridden the wave of interest, focusing on premium markets.

Whether you are a potential buyer or seller, the services of a trusted, specialist auctioneer provide clear benefits. The Gildings reputation is first rate for offering sought-after lots that are fresh to market, and of significant interest to both traders and collectors alike. Meanwhile, for probate sales, house clearances and individual high-value items they without doubt offer the widest possible market reach, attracting buyers internationally – and so maximising potential returns.

Buying with Gildings

Buying at auction need not be daunting for the uninitiated, instead it should be an exciting experience, often driven by impulse and desire to buy a piece you have seen and have fallen in love with. That could be an eye catching vase that would look just right in your living room; a piece of art that grabs your attention; or a new item of antique jewellery to finish off your look for the next big occasion.

The browsing process can begin at home as every auction has an illustrated online catalogue. If something catches the eye it is always best to view it in person in the gallery space when open for public viewing so you can appreciate the size, colour, condition and so on. Then it is a matter of deciding on your maximum price you would be willing to pay, and wait until sale day! As with any auction, you need to be aware of what is known as Buyer’s Premium –an additional charge on top of the final hammer price. At Gildings they have one of the lowest rates in the land of just 18%.

Bidding can be via four different ways – in person, bidding live via the Gildings website, leaving what is known as an absentee bid, or bidding via a telephone bid. Each way brings its own excitement and ultimately the opportunity for you to add to your home.

Selling with Gildings

The team at Gildings are there to help you through the selling process – and their aim is to ensure they provide the best professional advice to ensure they achieve the highest possible value for your item. The process starts with a valuation and then you are given a receipt listing your item which is then entered into the relevant auction based on item type. Attending the auction to see your item being sold is great fun and exciting to be a part of, however, should your item not sell then there is an opportunity for a re-entry or you can simply collect your item from Gildings. It is as easy as that.

With John now joined on the rostrum by sons Mark and Will, this expert team has never been stronger. Together with highly skilled, efficient and friendly staff, they look forward to offering you first class guidance.
